# How to read your skin type in 30 minutes

A simple bare-face test to tell if your skin is dry, oily, combination or normal, what "sensitive" really means, and why your skin type can change with the seasons.

Product labels ask you to know your skin type, but few people are taught how to find it. You can learn a lot about your skin with a clean face, half an hour and some honest attention.

### The bare-face test

- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water.
- Pat it dry with a clean towel. Do not apply any product.
- Wait about 30 minutes. Do not touch your face.
- Look at your skin in daylight, and notice how it feels when you smile or move your face.

Then compare what you see with the descriptions below.

### What the results mean

**Dry skin** feels tight, maybe a little rough. You may see flaky patches, and fine lines can look more visible. Dry skin makes less oil, so it needs richer moisturizers and gentle cleansers.

**Oily skin** looks shiny across the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Pores can look larger, and makeup can slide during the day. Oily skin still needs moisture: choose light, non-comedogenic gels or lotions.

**Combination skin** is shiny in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and normal or dry on the cheeks. This is very common. You can use a lighter product on the T-zone and a richer one where you feel dry.

**Normal skin** feels comfortable: not tight, not shiny. It is easier to care for, but it still needs daily sunscreen.

### What about sensitive skin?

Sensitivity is not a separate type. Any skin type can also be sensitive. Signs include stinging or burning when you apply products, redness that comes and goes, or a reaction to fragrance. If this sounds like your skin, choose fragrance-free products, keep your routine short, and always patch test new products.

### Dry or dehydrated?

These sound the same but are different. Dry skin makes too little oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water, and even oily skin can feel dehydrated: shiny but tight. Dehydration is often temporary. It can come from harsh cleansers, air conditioning, cold weather or too many active products. Gentle cleansing and a good moisturizer usually help.

### Your skin type can change

Your skin changes with the seasons, with hormones, with age and with where you live. Skin that is oily in a humid Hong Kong summer can feel dry in a heated room in winter. Repeat the test when the seasons change, and adjust your routine.

### How Glowinout reads your skin

Glowinout takes a different approach to the same question. The app asks you to scan your face and answer a few questions. It then looks at visible signs such as dryness, sensitivity, the under-eye area, fine lines and sun damage, and builds a routine around them. Scan again later to compare your results over time.

Glowinout gives cosmetic guidance, not medical advice. For painful breakouts, persistent redness or a rash, see a dermatologist.
