A morning routine does not need to be long. Its main job is to get your skin ready for the day and protect it from the sun. Most women can do it in about five minutes, and most of that time is waiting for one layer to settle before the next.

### The 5-minute routine

- **Cleanse or rinse (1 minute).** If you cleansed well the night before and your skin is dry or sensitive, lukewarm water can be enough. If your skin is oily, a gentle cleanser helps.
- **Serum (optional, 1 minute).** A light serum for your main goal. Many people use an antioxidant serum such as vitamin C in the morning, or a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid.
- **Moisturize (1 minute).** A gel or light lotion for oily skin, a richer cream for dry skin.
- **Sunscreen (1 to 2 minutes).** A broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher. This is the last skincare step, before makeup.

### Why sunscreen is the step to keep

If you only have one minute, use it for sunscreen. Daily sun protection helps prevent sunburn and the sun damage that shows up over time as dark spots and fine lines. Sunlight reaches your skin on cloudy days and through windows too.

Use enough. A thin layer gives less protection than the SPF on the label. Cover the whole face, the ears, the neck and the hairline. If your moisturizer has SPF, apply a full, generous layer of it, or use a separate sunscreen.

### Thin to thick

Apply watery products first and thicker products after. A serum goes before moisturizer. Sunscreen goes last, so nothing dilutes it. Give each layer a moment before the next. If your face still feels slippery, wait a little more before makeup.

### What you can skip

- **Toner.** Useful if you like it, not required.
- **Retinoids and exfoliating acids.** These usually belong in your evening routine.
- **Several serums.** One serum with a clear purpose is easier to judge than three.

### Make it automatic

Keep your morning products together, in the order you use them. Put sunscreen where you will see it, next to your toothbrush or your keys. A routine you do every day without thinking beats a perfect routine you do twice a week.
