AI skin analysis: what a face scan can and cannot tell you
A face scan can read visible signs on your skin and suggest a routine. It cannot diagnose a skin condition. What it sees, what it misses, and how to get a better result.
Skin analysis apps ask for a photo of your face and give you a picture of your skin and a routine. It is useful to know what this kind of analysis can do well, where its limits are, and how to help it give you a better result.
How it works
An AI skin analysis looks at photos of your face and describes what it can see on the surface of the skin. In the Glowinout app, you take three guided photos, from the front and from each side. The app helps with light, position and angles. It then looks at visible signs in five areas: dryness, sensitivity, the under-eye area, fine lines and sun damage. Your answers to a few questions, such as your skin type and your goals, complete the picture.
What a face scan can do well
- Notice visible signs such as dry or flaky areas, redness, shine, uneven tone, dark spots, under-eye darkness and fine lines.
- Look at different areas of the face, not only the face as a whole.
- Give you a starting point for a routine when you do not know where to begin.
- Help you compare over time, if you take your photos in similar conditions.
What it cannot do
- Diagnose a skin condition. Acne, rosacea, eczema, melasma and other conditions need a dermatologist to diagnose and treat.
- Check moles or spots for skin cancer. If a spot is new, changing, itching or bleeding, see a dermatologist. Do not rely on an app.
- See below the surface. A photo does not show allergies, hormones or how your skin feels.
- Know what you put on it. It does not know which products you used before or how your skin reacted, unless you tell it.
How to get a better result
- Use soft, even daylight from a window in front of you. Avoid strong side light, colored light and direct sun.
- Take the photos on clean, bare skin, without makeup or filters.
- Pull your hair back and remove glasses.
- Follow the guide for distance and angle, and hold the phone still.
- To compare results, scan again in the same place, at the same time of day.
Your photos and your privacy
Face photos are personal. Before you use any skin analysis app, read how it stores your photos, whether you can delete them, and whether they are used for advertising. Glowinout does not sell face scans or results, does not use them for ads, and does not build a faceprint to recognize who you are. You can delete a scan or your whole account at any time.
Use it as a guide
Think of a face scan as a friendly, organized second look in the mirror. It is good for choosing a routine and seeing change over time. For anything that worries you, a dermatologist is the right person to ask.
