How to build a simple skincare routine that you will keep
Three steps in the morning, three at night. A calm guide to the basic routine, the order of products, and how to add new ones without upsetting your skin.
A good routine is not the longest one. It is the one you do on a busy Tuesday, half awake, without thinking about it. Start with the basics, learn how your skin reacts, and add more only when you have a reason.
The basic routine
Most routines rest on three jobs: clean the skin, keep it comfortable, and protect it from the sun.
Morning
- Cleanse. A gentle cleanser, or only lukewarm water if your skin is dry or sensitive.
- Moisturize. A moisturizer that suits your skin. Lighter gels for oily skin, richer creams for dry skin.
- Protect. A broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, every day.
Evening
- Cleanse. Remove sunscreen, makeup and the day's oil. If you wear long-wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, an oil or balm cleanser first can help.
- Treat (optional). This is the place for a targeted product, such as a serum for uneven tone or a retinoid for texture.
- Moisturize. Seal everything in and give your skin a comfortable night.
That is it. Six steps across the whole day, and four of them take less than a minute.
Apply from thin to thick
A simple rule decides the order: apply the most watery products first and the thickest last. Toners and serums go before creams. Oils go near the end. Sunscreen is always the last step of your morning routine, before makeup.
Give each layer a moment to settle before the next. You do not need to wait long. If the surface feels slippery, wait a little more.
Add one new product at a time
When you start several new products in the same week and your skin reacts, you cannot tell which one caused it. Add a single product, use it for about two weeks, and then decide.
Before you use a new product on your face, do a patch test. Apply a small amount to a small area, such as the side of your neck or your inner arm, once a day for a few days. If you see redness, itching or swelling, do not use it on your face.
Give it time
Cleansers and moisturizers feel different from the first day. Products for tone, texture or fine lines often need several weeks of daily use before you can see a change. Take a photo in the same light every few weeks. Your memory is not a reliable judge of slow changes.
Signs that your routine is too much
- Your skin stings when you apply products that did not sting before.
- It feels tight and shiny at the same time.
- You see new flaky patches or redness.
When this happens, go back to the basic routine for a week or two. Cleanse gently, moisturize, and use sunscreen. Then add your treatment products back one at a time.
