Niacinamide and vitamin C are two of the most popular serum ingredients. For years, people were told never to use them together. Today, most skincare experts agree that the two can share a routine for most people. Here is why, and how to use them well.

What each one does

  1. Vitamin C (often listed as ascorbic acid or a vitamin C derivative) is an antioxidant. It is used to brighten dull skin and help fade the look of dark spots. Many people use it in the morning, under sunscreen.
  2. Niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) is used to support the skin barrier, even out tone and reduce the look of shine and pores. It is usually gentle.

Where the warning came from

Older tests showed that, under heat, niacinamide and vitamin C can react with each other. Those conditions are very different from a few drops on your face at room temperature. Modern serums are also made to stay stable. So the old "never mix" rule is no longer the general advice.

There is a practical point, though. Pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) works best at a low, acidic pH, and some people find it stings. Layering many products at once also raises the chance of irritation, whatever they are.

How to use them together

  1. Same routine: apply vitamin C first, let it settle for a minute, then niacinamide, then moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen.
  2. Split routine: vitamin C in the morning, niacinamide in the evening. This is the easiest option if your skin is sensitive.
  3. One product: some serums already combine the two.

If your skin reacts

Some people get temporary redness or a warm, flushed feeling. If that happens, use the two at different times of day, or on different days. If the stinging or redness continues, stop the product that seems to cause it. Patch test each new serum before you use it on your face.

Keep vitamin C fresh

Vitamin C serums can go off with light and air. Close the bottle well and keep it out of the sun. If the serum turns dark orange or brown, it is time to replace it.

Do not forget sunscreen

Neither ingredient replaces sunscreen. If your goal is a more even tone, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the step that protects your progress.
